Yes, the hospital can provide treatment to patients from overseas. Should you require help making an appointment with any of our consultants please contact the hospital for assistance.

No, you do not need private medical insurance to be treated at the hospital. We do offer services as a government institution to medical aid and non medical aid patients for most procedures. For more information on paying for your own treatment at the hospital please contact our hospital administration.

OUTLINED BELOW IS THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS SUMMARY – FRERE HOSPITAL

  • Posts are advertised either internally for employees within the institution or in the external media or on the Department of Health website.
  • Entry level posts for Health Professionals are not advertised, but the candidates are still interviewed by the relevant Managers (i.e. absorption of post community service candidates)
  • The intake for Medical Officers post community service is usually in January of each year. Applications are made to the Director Clinical Governance from July of each year; with early November being the cut-off date.
  • Applications for Nursing and Clinical Support, post community service, are made to the Nursing Service Manager and Deputy Director Clinical Support respectively from August of each year; with early November being the cut-off date
  • Internship and Community Service applications (Medical, Pharmacy, and Allied Workers) are done at a National and Provincial level.
  • Applications for Registrars are done in consultation with Walter Sisulu University
  • All posts that are advertised, list the relevant requirement for each, as well as competencies, skills, key performance areas, experience, salary level and closing date
  • No applications will be accepted after the closing date of any advertised post
  • Applicants must ensure that they meet the requirements of the advertised post and should submit the following:
  • Z83 application form which must be signed and dated
  • Certified copy of Identity Document
  • Certified copies of Qualifications
  • Certified copies of Registration Certificate with applicable professional body
  • Proof of current Registration
  • Copy of Curriculum Vitae

PROCESS ONCE AN APPLICATION HAS BEEN MADE:

  • Applications are date stamped to ensure it was received within the required time frame
  • All applications are recorded by Recruitment on a Master List
  • A Selection Committee in consultation with labour organisation is appointed to screen and short list the application. The committee will include the Manager who has requested the filling of the relevant post.
  • Reference checks and validation of qualification is performed for candidates to be interviewed.
  • Short listed candidates are invited for interviews. The Selection Committee form part of the Interview Panel.
  • Once all candidates have been interviewed, a memorandum recommending the appointment of the successful candidate/s is prepared and circulated for signature and approval.
  • Once the appointment has been approved by the relevant authority, an appointment letter is prepared for the successful candidate/s
  • The appointment letter is issued to the successful candidate/s and they must accept the offer within 10 days of receipt thereof
  • Unsuccessful candidates who were a part of the interview process should be notified in writing that they were not successful
